Columbia provided comprehensive preconstruction and construction management services for the renovation and expansion of the existing Admissions Building on the McLean Hospital campus. Work included the construction of a 20,100 sf addition, with connections to an adjacent Admissions Building.
The project included the demolition of an existing one story therapy area and the construction of the new three story building with basement, to house offices and two inpatient units. Columbia also managed interior renovations and mechanical upgrades within three floors of the existing building. A new AHU and emergency generator was also installed. A total of 7,000 sf of space was renovated, implemented around a busy occupied environment.
The project challenges included rerouting pedestrian and vehicular traffic, rerouting and phasing utilities, displacing campus parking, as well as construction trailer, material storage and delivery locations. Throughout construction, existing hospital operations continued with minimal interruptions. Columbia implemented this project utilizing BIM, as well as Lean construction principles.
