Columbia completed a series of major modifications to Snell Library – a bustling hub of campus life. The completely remodeled fourth floor boasts comfortable, naturally lit spaces for both quiet study and active collaboration. The new lower level offers ample seating, conference rooms, and a book collection area, showcasing the university’s archives and special collections. Working in phases, the first floor was also updated including a new addition to the building with a spacious event space, while the second and third floors boast a combination of new study areas, research spaces and areas for faculty-supported experiential learning.
The library’s main stair has been completely renovated from the basement to the fourth floor. The unique stairway with a top-to-bottom hanging light fixture and glass walls connects students to specialized areas on each floor. With the use of operable fire partitions, the stair was converted to an egress stair, while also opening it up visually with glass.
In advance of the major renovations, summer projects in the building included renovation to a series of restrooms on all floors, renovation of 20 classrooms in the basement, and replacement of the building's heat risers and horizontal distribution system. All work was completed while students were occupying this primary campus facility.
The multi-year renovation of the entire library was designed to meet the rapidly changing research and learning needs of the university community.
